Downrigging is one of the best ways to control the depth of a fishing lure. Ideally you want to be able to keep your lure in the depth range where your fish finder is indicating the fish are located. When trolling faster or going deeper, more weight will be needed. Downriggers include several different components and must be properly set up to work effectively and efficiently. The downrigger allows anglers to control the depth very precisely, so the bait can be offered at the ideal depth when trolling. A release will release your fishing line when a hit occurs. If your still asking how one works, the line from the fishing rod is attached to a weight, and is lowered down to the desired depth. The depth can be varied by hand or with advanced electronics. When the fish bites, the line releases automatically. The fisherman lifts the rod from the holder, and reels the fish in an ordinary way. The weight is raised manually or with an electric motor. With an electric downrigger you just simply push a switch, to raise and lower the weighted cable to a desired depth. A manual downrigger is usually cheaper in price and requires more human effort to operate. On the other hand, an electric downrigger is usually higher in price and only requires the push of a switch to operator since it is powered through your boats electrical system.
