Most fishing lines are monofilament or fluorocarbon. Today's fishing line is much more improved than the original fishing lines introduced decades ago. When choosing monofilament as fishing line, be mindful of three things: pound breaking strength, diameter and memory. Fishing line is rated in breaking strength, usually stated in pounds, which is the strength of weight that the line will break, ranging from two 2 lbs. to 600 or more. Choose the strength appropriate to your rod or style of fishing. The recommended line strengths are usually stated on the fishing rod, classified as light (6 or 8 to 14 lbs.), medium (15 to 30 lbs.) or heavy (above 30 or so). But breaking strength is important only as related to diameter. The smaller the diameter relative to strength, the better, because it means the line is stronger. Thinner line is less visible to the fish. The third factor to consider is line memory. When the line stays in its curled form even when unwound, it has great line memory. Lines with significant memory factors are not good in casting because they tend to rub more against the reel's spool lip, slowing the cast down. Also, they tend to curl up when out of the reel, making for a mess at times. Another fishing line is the braided line. Braided fishing line gives you the sensitivity to feel the lightest bite, the control you need for a secure hook-set, and the strength to endure the toughest fish. Regardless of the species you're after or the cover you're fishing. Braided fishing line seems to be a strong, smooth, ultra sensitive and a very durable fishing line. There is no line stretch which gives you a quick hook set and good control over the fish.
