Fly Tying 101
Your Fly Fishing Tip Of The Day
A wet fly is meant to resemble an injured or dead adult insect, or a young insect, and will spend considerable more time submerged in the water than dry flies would.
Fly tying involves binding different materials to a hook using thread, and is usually based on observing fish and what they prey on, and then developing a fly that resembles the prey in order to lure the fish. There are specific patterns for tying flies for different species of fish that are being sought by the fisherman, such as trout ties. Some of the most common materials needed for tying flies are hackle feathers from a rooster. The hackle is what gives fishing flies their organic look and their intricate color patterns. Hair from an animal such as a deer, elk and beaver helps to copy the natural shape and color of an insect.
