    Groups host fly-fishing expo at Canterbury School Jan. 5 The Sanibel Fly Fishers, Sanibel Sea School and Canterbury School are hosting a fly fishing expo from 6-9 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 5, in the Canterbury School gymnasium.

    Last chance for grouper for a while but other species strong

    We hope Santa brought you the new rod and reel you wanted because there’s some great fishing out there. And this is your last chance for grouper for 2016, as the season is closed Jan. 1 to April 30. We continue to find the most productive fishing in the nearshore areas on both the Atlantic and gulf/bay side of the islands.

    More than fishing: Best things to do in Islamorada

    The one piece of advice I give anyone going to the Florida Keys is: Don’t rush on the drive south. Stop along the way – frequently. In fact, don’t feel you must go to Key West at all. There are other great places to make your base in the Keys.

    Blue crab trap closure for NW Florida starts Jan. 5

    Recreational and commercial blue crab traps must be removed from some northwest Florida waters before Jan. 5, the first day of a 10-day trap closure. Blue crab traps may not be in state waters (shore to 9 nautical miles, including intracoastal waterways) from the Florida/Alabama state line through the Franklin/Wakulla county line from Jan.
