Canadian Goose Season to Kick Off

North American Hunter

Resident Canada goose season begins in late August or early September for most US states. A resident Canada goose is known as a goose breeding locally and residing regionally. Sources indicate US resident Canada goose population continues to expand for 2009 with statewide distribution. Most golf courses, parks, farm fields, waterways both wild and suburban, are over populated with them. You can't hunt in all the places, but some you certainly can.

Sometimes goose hunters simply pattern the daily movements of these birds for success, targeting feeding and loafing locations. Sometimes they hunt them in other traditional ways that combine food and setting up with goose decoys. Sometimes it works and sometimes not. If not, try to figure out why it is happening. If geese flare at your calling, stop calling. Sometimes the site of your decoy spread is all it will take, to bring in the birds.

Goose hunters new to an area can find feeding geese by looking for high ground somewhere near roost water. Use your binoculars and vehicle to follow birds out in the mornings and afternoons.

Jump-shooting river, stream, and creeks can offer an alternative when resident geese aren't moving. Storms might push waterfowl into sheltered areas provided by skinny waters, where they hold, waiting out the weather. Even bluebird days with preferred food sources might plant them there. On such outings consider jump-shooting resident geese.

In the US migratory game bird hunters must have a valid hunting license, for the state they are hunting in and are required by federal law to register for the National Migratory Bird Harvest Information Program (HIP). This includes all who hunt ducks, geese, snipe, woodcock and coots. Separate HIP permits are usually needed for each state. Waterfowl hunters must also obtain a federal duck stamp which can be purchased at any US post office.
