Squirrel hunting is also a way to improve oneself as a deer hunter. During squirrel season, you may fire several hundred times, each time stalking game, assuming good shooting form, and aiming for a pinpoint target. If you can consistently make good head shots on squirrels at 25 yards, then you should have no trouble with a deer at 100 yards.

Anyone who has spent any time walking in the woods has suddenly seen a squirrel running across the ground or seen the flash of tail on a tree branch. Squirrels can either be totally oblivious to your presence or as wary as a white tail.

Squirrels are not migrating elk. They haunt the same areas throughout the season, and if you’ve seen them there once, you will probably see them there again. Squirrels shot at and missed may slip down a hole into the cavity of a tree. They always come back out ,so patience is a virtue when hunting squirrels.

Squirrels call to each other through out the day. An experienced hunter can distinguish squirrels from birds even over long distances, even if they make only a single, rounded, pearly chirp. Depending on circumstances, squirrels may chatter all day long. They seem to do this for a variety of reasons. One is
to warn other squirrels of possible approaching danger,. Another reason is out of excitement, or just a social urge. Most important to squirrel hunters, however, is the fact that squirrels call to signal location or to request the location of a neighbor. When a squirrel chatters randomly or in answer to a squirrel call, try to get a precise fix on the spot.

When you take youngsters squirrel hunting, drill safety into their heads. Teaching utmost respect for firearms may avert a tragedy down the road. The .22 is a small yet potentially deadly round it must be fired only in appropriate areas and always with caution.

Squirrels are abundant most every where. Seasons are liberal with generous or no bag limits at all. Best of all, the hunting can be challenging, even addictive. For most states early squirrel season starts late in August or early September. Always be sure to check with the local DNR for season dates and bag limits, before venturing out into the woods to hunt the elusive tree bandit .
