Hunting Squirrels in New York
If there’s one game animal that could use some additional attention, it’s the squirrel. The six-month long season on bushytails opens September 1st, and while thousands will be served by household cooks using a variety of recipes by the time the season ends on Feb. 28, the harvest will put nothing more than a dent in the overall population.
Squirrel populations are strong in most areas of the state, and while they have been enjoying the benefits of declining hunting pressure and the maturation of habitat for some time, the only difficulty squirrels have come across in recent years is the loss of mast caused by gypsy moth caterpillar defoliation of oak stands, which has occurred sporadically across the state.
There was a time when squirrel hunters outnumbered those who pursued ducks and deer. Mostly because of its attraction to youngsters and big game hunters who used the season as a way to scout for signs of whitetails. But times have changed over the years, particularly among young people who spend a great deal of their leisure time playing computerized games.
But squirrel hunting can be fun, relaxing and the skills that you develop can be carried over into deer hunting season.
The gray squirrel and fox squirrel are among the most sought-after, and when pressed in hiding against a tree are challenging targets. Moreover, their speed on the ground and through the treetops has irritated many a hunter.
Although the same basic hunting styles can be used for each, the habitat favored by both species can differ.
