Calling Coyotes
FNW Reader Tabitha asked:

Im going goose hunting in late December. I want to call in and get a couple coyotes during the off time. I have never used a wild game call. Where would be the best place to set up? Its a ton of open hills and a couple places with little forest type areas. Also what calls would you recommend ? I wish not to spend a lot of money I just want to have some fun. Any tips or advice would be greatly appreciated!

Make sure you are very well camo’d and use a strong cover scent.Your best place would probably be the edge of a stand of trees where you can blend into the background. Coyote’s have excellent eyesight, outstanding sense of smell, and very keen hearing. For calls the best would be a dying rabbit call for long range, then a quieter mouse squeaker in case the dog hangs up too far for a shot. Both can be purchased for very reasonable prices right here at Field-N-water.

A good rabbit in distress call will work in most situations. Make it sound like a baby crying is the best description. Wear camo and scent blocker, but don’t worry about movement the coyote will just think its dinner trying to get away.
