FNW Reader Iceman09 asked:
I am going ice fishing this weekend. In the lake are musky, pike, walleye, bass, and panfish. I want to fish for all them on different set ups. What should I use for bait? Cant use live bait. Any setups that have worked for you? Where do bass go in cold water? Just let me know what to use, where to use it, and how to use it. Its catch and release.

Try using worm colored tube jigs
Glow jigs tipped with a minnow, say a crappie minnow, will usually catch just about anything thru the ice. I use fire line too, incase I get a walleye pike that can cut thru my monofilament.
Good luck, and it IS OK to keep your limit of whatever you catch
if you can’t use live bait you will catch more fish by jigging than anything else. I like the rapala vertical ice fishing jigs. I’ve caught a lot of fish through the ice with them. If you want to use traps you can bait them with dead fish, smelts and shiners work well. Berkeley gulp baits have a good reputation but I have not caught much with them. Some people I know use canned shrimp or canned corn. I’ve never tried either. Good luck.

That’s quite a list of fish. I’ve caught a few bass through the ice but that seems to be more just chance than anything. The one’s I’ve caught have been on my tip-ups with smaller minnows. I think bass get pretty lethargic in really cold water. For the pike/musky you want to use a tip-up with large shiners for bait. Tip-ups with smaller minnows and a 15lb monofilament leader will work for walleye. For panfish you want to use a jig pole, with 2 or 4 lb line then a jugging hook (bright orange/yellow together have worked best for me) tipped with wax worms, goldenrod grubs, or maggots.
