The hunting season is just around the corner. Does that mean hikers, campers, and cyclists can't have a safe and fun autumn in the outdoors ? Usually state parks serve as a safe haven (no-hunting) for outdoor recreation other then hunting. The gross majority of US state parks do not allow hunting, but there are a few that do. As for example in New York state, there are several state parks that allow bowhunting within designated areas. Most US city parks do not permit hunting, and some rural parks allow camping.
Fall is a pleasant time to visit the parks. Temperatures are usually cooler, crowds are dwindling, and the deciduous trees are showing their colors.

Private campgrounds are another safe option. Many are open year-round and sit in prime destinations. Hunting is allowed on federal lands, including the Bureau of Land Management, Forest Service and National Wildlife Refuges. However, their visitor centers and campgrounds have designated areas in which hunting isn't permitted. Each campground has specific regulations regarding firearms.

If you are going into the field during hunting season, be prepared. Use common sense, be aware if there are hunters in the area. Protect yourself by making you, your family members and your pets visible. Wear bright colors or hunter orange clothing or vests. Hunters wear orange so they can be seen and not mistaken for an animal. So should you.

Hunters and non-hunters can coexist safely when each party does its share. So be aware, be safe and most important use common sense this autumn when out and about in the woods.
