FNW Reader Tabitha asked:
Im going goose hunting in late December. I want to call in and get a couple coyotes during the off time. I have never used a wild game call. Where would be the best place to set up? Its a ton of open hills and a couple places with little forest type areas. Also what calls would you recommend ? I wish not to spend a lot of money I just want to have some fun. Any tips or advice would be greatly appreciated!

Coyotes are adapting and thriving throughout North America. Just thirty years ago, they were unheard of in some areas of the United States. Today, much of the available hunting lands across America is almost devoid of pheasants, rabbits and red fox, but the coyotes are thriving. With the limited amount of cover provided by sparse marshes, fence lines and woods, a pair of hunting coyotes has little trouble locating and feasting upon nesting pheasants and other small game. God help the red fox that gets caught out in the open by the aggressive coyote.
Small game, waterfowl and ground birds aren’t the only things farm country coyotes prey upon. Whitetail deer fall into that category too.

FNW Reader Thomas asked: What non-animal scents works best for coyote hunting? Dirt, pine, juniper etc. Can you use too much scent control ? Anyone try boiling down pine needles or something to make their own scent block spray for coyote hunting ? What detergent for clothes should I use for coyote hunting ?

Eastern coyote populations are found in good numbers in standing wood lots, in thick river bottoms, crop fields and even in rural back yards. Larger than its western cousin, a mature eastern coyote may weigh 30 to 45 pounds and stand 22 to 26 inches at the shoulder. These large animals can cover a lot of ground, with males typically establishing home ranges of 10 to 20 miles. Because of the coyote’s evolved cunning and innate elusiveness, it has thrived East of the Mississippi and has even reached the status of a trophy animal in the eyes of many an eastern dog hunters.
